For most new parents, especially first-time parents, deciding when to take a child out in public and around other people for the first time is a pressing and worrying topic. Worryingly, babies do not have fully developed immune systems.
According to most pediatric health experts, babies can be taken to public places or outdoors right away as long as parents follow some basic safety precautions. Getting out, especially in nature, is good for both parents and babies. Sunlight and fresh air provide health benefits such as vitamin D exposure as well as a mood and energy boost.
To keep your newborn healthy and safe, it's important to be aware of the environment and people you encounter while out in public in the first few weeks and months to reduce exposure to illness. Here are a few simple tips to follow when taking your baby out:
Limited direct sunlight exposure - The sun provides the essential vitamin D for all of us, especially newborn babies. However, babies are also more prone to sunburn. Discuss your child's personal health with your doctor to determine how much sunlight is safe.
Keep your hands and face away from germs - this is an obvious and important tip. You don't always know who is sick, but in general, it's best to keep other children's hands and faces away from your baby's hands, face, and mouth. Also, it is usually wise not to allow strangers to touch or hold your baby. For family members, you still have options. Hopefully, if family members know they're sick, they'll instinctively not ask to hold the baby. Either way, when someone asks for a baby, you have the right to say no politely but firmly. Their health is at risk!
Choose a location—schools, doctor’s offices, hospitals, day care centers, airplanes—that are known as germ centers and should be avoided as much as possible. If that's not possible, hold your baby tightly in your lap or carrier, or put a lid on the baby carrier or stroller. Also, be sure to wash your hands frequently so that you don't pass anything you pick up when you touch the surface or other people's hands.
Watch out for the heat (and cold) - don't over or under dress your baby to suit the outside temperature. Parents and grandparents tend to think that tying up the baby is necessary, but depending on the weather, this may not be necessary and could cause the baby to overheat. Dress your baby in as many clothes as possible and bring a blanket just in case.
