What are the functions of folic acid?

Published by Dailys 2024-03-06

Experts suggest that women should pay more attention to supplementing folic acid at ordinary times. Women who are preparing to become pregnant and expectant mothers especially need to consume a certain amount of folic acid, because supplementing folic acid can prevent babies from being born with birth defects. The important functions of folic acid are as follows:

1. Prevent neural tube birth defects

Folic acid is beneficial for fetal neural tube development. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, women who take the recommended daily dose of folic acid for at least one month before conception and for the first 3 months of pregnancy can reduce the risk of neural tube defects in babies by 50%-70 %.

2. Reduce the risk of preeclampsia in expectant mothers

Studies have shown that taking a multivitamin containing folic acid may reduce the risk of preeclampsia in expecting mothers. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific complication, a hypertensive disorder unique to pregnancy, affecting 5%-8% of expectant mothers. Preeclampsia makes pregnancy more difficult, and folic acid helps reduce the risk of preeclampsia in pregnant women.

3. Reduce the risk of hyperlipidemia in pregnancy

Folic acid is good for the health of pregnant women. The Chinese Nutrition Society recommends taking it from 2-3 months before pregnancy and until 3 months of pregnancy or the entire pregnancy. In addition to preventing neural tube defects, it is also beneficial to reduce the risk of pregnancy hyperlipidemia.
